HSBC has announced the launch of a text message banking service for businesses - the service enabling 'on demand' 24 hour secure access to account information, including mini-statements and balance enquiries through their mobile phone.

The new service complements the bank's business internet banking and telephone banking operations, giving customers access via SMS to account information on up to five accounts including: weekly or monthly mini-statements showing the balance and last five transactions.

Also on offer is an instant alert message system that can be set up to alert the customer to: account balance fluctuations when the balance falls below, or rises above, a certain amount, set by the customer; credits received to the account that are above a certain amount, again set by the customer and payments made from the account.

Registration for text message banking is free of charge, via telephone banking, and customers can receive one weekly or monthly mini-statement for free.

Additional statements and personal alerts are charged at a flat fee of £2.50 per month.

Shift Manager, a software program from Macis, which allows driver agencies and haulage companies to computerise their administration systems, has added a SMS Text ‘bolt on’ that automates handling of SMS text messages both in and out of the system. It allows users to offer shifts to the driver by text and to record and document acceptances within the system. If a driver fails to respond to a shift offer, the system will alarm to remind the operator a shift has not been accepted.

Flexta.co.uk has been selected to build a customised SMS text sales and marketing platform for the Association of Independent Business (AIB) and its members. The 12-month trial will comprise of a branded text-for-more-information solution, coupled with a series of SMS marketing campaigns to increase AIB membership.

Tomi T Ahonen has written a facinating article on the apparent lack of SMS text usage by American Executives.

Don't American managers WANT to be faster than their competitors? Don't American executives appreciate the value of discretion, confidentiality and secrecy in business transactions?

Of course they do. But American executives have been horribly badly served by their cellular telecoms industry, from poor handsets to poor coverage to poor services to bad pricing to bad interconnectivity etc.

It was only a few years ago that American carriers finally allowed cross-network SMS text message delivery. And until recently, SMS text messaging was not even a standard service, you had to PAY to have it turned on!
