Over the past couple of days I've read numerous articles on the how an emergency SMS Text broadcast service could have saved lives at the Virginia Tech Massacre. One of the better articles was written by Andy Carvin.

My only comment is that the technology to send SMS text to groups of people has long been available, it's just a case of implementing it.

I know I've said this each time a disaster has happened over the last couple of years, but why the hell don't we have an emergency SMS Text broadcasting tool that can be used to send warnings to every cell phone in a given area or to a given group?

Spotted this story being touted as an SMS Text Scam, but on closer inspection you'll discover that the scammers simply used SMS text to contact the victims. The SMS text scam didn't actually involve the use of SMS text to take any payments.

So if the victims of this so called SMS text scam had received their 'hook' by post, would we start saying 'Malaysian Postal Service Scam'? Me thinks not.

Police have picked up 14 suspects, including three Indonesians, for cheating people throughout Sabah - and possibly nationwide - through a Short Messaging Service (SMS) scam since last July.

A pilot scheme for a new SMS text alert service has been launched to help with the recovery of stolen trucks.

Sponsored by SMS text messaging specialist FASTSMS and Welcome Break, the service alerts other truckers when a theft occurs. The SMS text alert includes a full description and truck license number. Recipients simply call the police following a positive ID of a stolen truck.

Set up by Barrie Tozer, full time trucker and part-time webmaster of www.truckersworld.co.uk, the pilot scheme operates completely free to all users. The hope is that sponsorship or contributions from interested parties who could save a lot of money from recovery, will make a modest contribution to keep the service free.

Truck Crime is increasing due to the lack of secure parking and basically easy pickings for the criminal minded, plenty of time to unload and move the goods due to lack of Police resources, and to everyone else just another vehicle on an estate.
